For medical professionals
Suspected carbon monoxide poisoning? We can point you to an expert.
In general practice it is hard to keep up with every subject. Our experts have dedicated their working lives to carbon monoxide and its physiological, neurological and cognitive effects.
Clinical reminders
- Ask about the setting. Several people or pets ill at once, symptoms that ease away from home, or worse when heating runs.
- Test early. COHb falls quickly with fresh air or oxygen. Record the time of the sample and of the last exposure.
- Don’t rely on pulse oximetry. Standard SpO₂ readings can look normal in significant poisoning.
- Plan follow-up. Delayed neurological sequelae can appear days to weeks after apparent recovery.
